Xero Accountants UK

Last reviewed 17 July 2026

Compare certified Xero accountants from £39/month — cloud bookkeeping, MTD VAT returns and payroll on Xero, often with the subscription included.

Xero is one of the UK's most widely used cloud accounting platforms, and many practices are Xero-certified partners. A Xero accountant sets up bank feeds, invoicing, VAT and payroll correctly from day one, keeps you compliant with Making Tax Digital, and can often bundle the software subscription into your monthly fee at partner rates. Xero works well for sole traders, limited companies and growing businesses alike.

What does a Xero accountant do?

They set up Xero, connect bank feeds, code transactions, and file VAT or payroll from the same ledger. Year-end accounts and tax returns should follow from those books. Xero certification is training on the software — it is not a substitute for ICAEW or ACCA membership.

Ask who owns the Xero organisation if you leave. Ask who codes versus who reviews the year end. Partner pricing on the subscription is a real saving when it is in the letter.

Should I pick a Xero accountant or pick the software first?

Pick the accountant first if you do not already live in a package. A certified Xero partner will migrate you; a QuickBooks specialist will not enjoy doing it. If your current firm is competent on another cloud suite, switching software to chase a directory filter is usually a waste.

Xero is HMRC-recognised for MTD for VAT and supports MTD for Income Tax. Confirm current product capability with the firm — we do not recertify software on this page.

How much does a Xero accountant cost?

Packages typically run £39–£129 per month on our editorial benchmarks, frequently with the Xero subscription included at partner rates. Confirm whether VAT, payroll and the licence sit in the base fee.

Headline “from £39” often excludes VAT returns. Compare three written quotes on the same scope, including who does the coding versus who reviews the year end.

Is Xero compatible with Making Tax Digital?

Xero is widely used as HMRC-recognised software for MTD for VAT. It also supports MTD for Income Tax for sole traders and landlords in the relevant cohorts. Spreadsheets alone are not enough unless bridging software links them to HMRC.

Your accountant should name who submits each quarter. Pick software before the 2026 Income Tax rush if you are in the first cohort. Confirm current rules on GOV.UK.

Xero vs QuickBooks — which should I use?

Both can run a UK small business and both have MTD paths. Pick the one your accountant already lives in, unless you have a strong reason (inventory, a parent company already on one suite, staff trained on one product). Switching later is possible and annoying.

We compare accountants, not Xero against Intuit. See the dedicated Xero vs QuickBooks answer for a longer comparison.

What should a Xero package include?

Access to the organisation, bank rec, invoicing setup, and year-end accounts or Self Assessment as appropriate. VAT and payroll should be named as in or extra. The licence should say who pays Xero if you leave.

App add-ons for expenses, stock and payments are extra. Catch-up of an old CSV dump is extra.

  • Usually in: Xero setup, books, year-end filings
  • Often extra: VAT, payroll, apps, migration from another package

How should I choose a Xero accountant?

Check they are a Xero partner if you want partner rates, then check ICAEW, ACCA, AAT or ICAS. Compare quotes that include the licence. Skip anyone who will not say who owns the organisation.

Certification is a training badge. Practising rights come from the professional body. You want both if they will file your tax.

  1. Confirm Xero (not another suite) is what you will actually use
  2. Ask whether the subscription is bundled at partner rates
  3. Get VAT and payroll named in or out
  4. Verify the firm on a professional-body register

Frequently asked questions

Why choose a Xero-certified accountant?▼

Certified advisers are trained on Xero's bank feeds, VAT, payroll and reporting, so setup and migrations go more smoothly. They can also offer partner pricing on the subscription. Certification is not a substitute for ICAEW or ACCA membership.

Is Xero MTD-compatible?▼

Xero is HMRC-recognised for MTD for VAT and supports MTD for Income Tax, so quarterly digital updates and returns can be filed from your accounts. Confirm current capability with the firm and on GOV.UK.

How much does a Xero accountant cost?▼

Packages typically run £39–£129 per month depending on your business type and transaction volume, frequently with the Xero subscription included at partner rates. Confirm what the fee covers before signing up.

Who owns my Xero organisation if I switch accountant?▼

That depends on how it was set up. Ask before you sign. You should be able to take the data with you; some firms keep billing the licence. Get it in the letter.

Can I stay on Xero and change accountant?▼

Yes. Invite the new firm, remove the old one, and complete professional clearance. Do not let the old firm cancel the organisation as a leaving gift.

Do I need a Xero accountant if I already keep tidy books?▼

You still need someone for year-end accounts or Self Assessment unless you will file those yourself. You may not need a monthly bookkeeper. Buy the product you actually use.
