Choosing an accountant
What is ICAS and what does the CA designation mean?
By Kaiser Khan · Updated 9 July 2026
What CA training involves
The ICAS CA qualification combines professional exams across accounting, tax, audit, and business with a structured training contract at an approved employer. Like the other chartered bodies, ICAS requires continuing professional development after qualification, and members offering services to the public must hold a practising certificate with professional indemnity insurance behind it.
Do you need a Scottish accountant for Scottish taxes?
It helps but isn't required — and it works both ways. Scotland sets its own income tax bands for employment income, and Scottish property transactions use LBTT rather than stamp duty land tax, so businesses and directors in Scotland benefit from an accountant fluent in those differences. Many ICAS firms have exactly that fluency, but plenty of ICAEW/ACCA firms serve Scottish clients well too — ask about Scottish tax experience rather than relying on the badge.
How to verify an ICAS claim
ICAS maintains a public record of members and regulated firms — search on icas.com or ask the practitioner for their membership details to confirm directly. On Pick My Accountant, ICAS badges link out so you can verify current membership before engaging. As with every body: genuine members welcome the check.
People also ask
Is ICAS equal to ICAEW?
In practical terms, yes — both award chartered-level qualifications with comparable exams, ethics codes, insurance requirements, and disciplinary processes. The choice between an ICAS and an ICAEW firm should rest on fit and experience, not the initials.
What does CA mean after an accountant's name?
Chartered Accountant — the ICAS designation. It predates every other accountancy qualification in the world, and in the UK it signals full chartered status just as ACA (ICAEW) does.
I'm in England — is an ICAS firm fine for my company?
Completely. UK company law, corporation tax, VAT, and PAYE are the same across Great Britain, and ICAS members practise throughout the UK. Verify the practising certificate and sector experience as you would with any firm.
