What is AAT and is an AAT accountant qualified enough?

By Kaiser Khan · Updated 9 July 2026

What AAT covers and how licensing works

AAT's qualification focuses on practical, day-to-day accounting: double-entry, final accounts, tax returns, VAT, payroll, and costing. To serve the public, a member needs an AAT licence that names the exact services they're approved to provide — one practitioner might be licensed for bookkeeping and VAT only, another for the full range including limited company accounts and corporation tax. You can ask to see the licence, and AAT runs a public directory of licensed members.

When AAT is the right choice

For a sole trader, landlord, or micro limited company with routine compliance needs, a licensed AAT accountant typically does the same core work as a chartered firm at a noticeably lower fee. The business model is usually personal and local — often the practitioner who answers the phone does the work. If your affairs are straightforward, paying chartered rates buys you little extra.

When you've outgrown it

Consider a chartered (ICAEW/ICAS) or chartered certified (ACCA) firm when complexity rises: group structures, R&D claims, due diligence, exit planning, HMRC enquiries with real money at stake, or anything approaching audit thresholds. Statutory audit is legally reserved for registered auditors, which AAT practices are not. A good AAT practitioner will say so and refer you on — many work alongside chartered firms for exactly this.

People also ask

Is AAT a 'real' accounting qualification?

Yes — it's a regulated, exam-based professional qualification with ethics obligations, insurance requirements, and a disciplinary process. It sits at technician level rather than chartered level, which affects the complexity of work, not the legitimacy.

Can an AAT accountant file my limited company accounts?

If their licence covers limited company services, yes — including Companies House accounts and the CT600. Check the licence covers the specific services you need; that's what the licensing system is for.

How much cheaper is AAT than chartered?

There's no fixed discount, but AAT-licensed practices commonly sit at the lower end of our fee benchmarks — sole trader packages from around £39/month. Compare like-for-like scope before deciding on price alone.
